Ask the Swan Specialist

In Response To: Lost swan (Katrina)

I have had a pair of adult mute swans kept on my pond for about a year. We feed them daily and assure for their safety. What we didn't do correctly was clip their wings. Last week they took flight. They actually flew about 1 mile to our town's pond. It is gated so we were able to locate them quickly and feed them daily until we could figure out catching them. Today we were able to catch the male (clip him) but the female finally flew. My question...is their any chance she will return to our pond where her mate is? Or will she have that instinct since we got her as a rescue when she was an adult already? I am so saddened by these events as I fear for her.
