Ask the Swan Specialist

In Response To: Re: New female (The Regal Swan)

Hi Michelle:

First, is the male swan safe from another coyote attack? You may get another swan only to have one or both swans attacked again. Predators remember where they were successful in getting a meal, and the last thing that you want to do is place another swan in danger. If the habitat is not safe, then we would strongly suggest not getting another swan and bringing the male swan into a covered pen at night. The pen needs to be enclosed at the top and on the bottom so that no predator can enter at the top or dig under to get to the helpless swans. Swans can be trained to go out in the daytime and come into the pen at night. It will take a lot of time on your part and many treats!

If you decide to get another female, the female needs to be breeding age and since you have a 6 year old male, we would suggest a 3-6 year old female. Usually, males may or may not re-mate if their original mate has died. Female swans will usually re-mate, but again, it totally depends on the individual swans. Once again, ensure that the pen is enclosed at the top and bottom to prevent a predator from getting to the swan(s). The Regal Swan
