cygnets with amputated foot

Can a cygnet live with an amputated foot? A family of swans (two adults three "kids") live in a waterway where I live in Nassau County Long Island New York. One of the cygnets has an amputated foot. He/she looks a little smaller than its siblings and did not eat much bread when I fed the family although looked to be able to keep up with the family. With some difficulty he/she was also able to get onto ground. The parents were extremely attentive to the injured cygnet and the family appeared to be very "close knit". I do not wish to see the family separated if possible nor do I wish to see the cygnet be euthanized. Any info you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Donna
PS .. the stump appears to be pink and healing w/o signs of obvious infection
