Hi Jill:
We would strongly suggest that you not try to incubate the abandoned egg. First, unless you know exactly when the mother swan abandoned the egg, you do not know if it is fertile or even still viable. Secondly, swans are pretty good at determining when something is not viable or is rotten. The egg may have a dead cygnet in the egg or could just be rotten. In any case, swan eggs can explode and cause a huge mess and even damage. Unless you are absolutely sure that this is a viable egg, you would be better to abandon the idea of incubation.
Also, incubation of a swan egg takes a precise temperature, humidity and specific number of rotations which can usually only be obtained by using a commercial incubator. We have seen research on the exact specifics for incubation and these can be found by going on-line to procure. Otherwise, you might try to contact Jack Long's Exotic Waterfowl in California, Bob Knox at Knox Swans or Sylvan Heights (North Carolina) as they are breeders of swans. The Regal Swan
