Ask the Swan Specialist

In Response To: Re: humane mute swan deterrent (Melanie)

I am seeking a humane solution because I do not want to see these beautiful creatures killed. I certainly would never hurt them but the other people around here will. These are mute swans that live in a private pond in the neighborhood. The home owner denies purchasing them but admits to allowing them to live in her pond. From what I have learned so far, mute swans are not indiginous and are not protected. I have also been told that if I call authorities the swans will be captured and euthanized. The DNR web site actually gives tips on how to shoot them. Everyone acknowledges that this is a temporary mating situation but nobody seems to care. Its breaking my heart. Last year there were 3 swans...now 2.
