Hi Donna:

We need you to describe the feather pulling. Are you physically seeing her preen herself or is she actually pulling the feathers. Is there a large amount of feathers on the ground? Is there one specific area of the body that she is pulling so that there may be for instance, no feathers on a section of the neck, etc.

We ask this question, because right now is the time that most swans begin to moult which is a normal removal of the old feathers for the summer months. They will moult again right before the winter so that warmer and new feathers will grow.

If there is a specific area of the body that she is pulling and no where else on the body, then she could be stressed and ill. If this is the case, then she needs to be captured and taken to an avian veterinarian for an exam and diagnosis. If she is not interested or the other swans are not interested in being united with her, then we would leave her and let her live on her own. Just keep feeding her supplementally with cracked corn and poultry layer pellet adding some lettuce and she will get the proper nutrition that she needs. She should do just fine. The Regal Swan
