In Response To: Re: Swan with broken wing (The Regal Swan)

Hi Leslie

The swan could have a broken wing or a condition known as angel wing caused by too much protein in the diet or a birth defect.

We are in agreement that something needs to be done for the swan, but you will have to be cautious to whom you speak about the swan.

Your state is culling the birds so they can introduce the larger Trumpeter Swans for Trophy Waterfowl hunting purposes. That is correct, state and wildlife agencies in several states are feeding the public with blatant misinformation regarding Mute Swans so the public will buy into the non scientific based unsustainable killing program at the expense of the swans and your tax paying dollars. They will also tell you that the monies are coming from hunting permits and conservation grants. Start asking under the Freedom of Information Act FOIL and you'll see how evasive the state and federal wildlife officials are on this point and do not want you to find out the actual cost and funding.

If you cannot find a no kill wildlife rehabilitation facility in your area, you might try Bob Knox Knox Swans and Dogs in Illinois. He may be able to refer you to someone who can help.

It is a sad day when wildlife officials view taxpayer owned wildlife and habitats as a money making venture and advocate the killing of any wildlife species that is injured, sick or needs care. The swan will die if a predator attacks because it won't be able to fly or escape, but may be killed by your own wildlife officials because it is a Mute Swan and taking up valuable hunting space in a habitat it rightfully belongs.
