Hi Marian:

Yes, it is possible to have the swan circumvent the pinioning or wing clipping by learning how to shift its body weight and fly. However, more than likely, the pinioning was not done properly or in its entirety which would help the swan to fly.

We often see this situation and the one regarding the gender of a swan from many owners. Especially, if the swans were brought from unscrupulous breeders/sellers or someone who did not take the bird to a licensed veterinarian and have the swan actually and properly pinioned or sexed.

In the case of pinioning, we have heard horror stories of how pinioning is conducted by individuals not willing to pay for a licensed knowledgeable veterinarian. The pinioning procedure not done correctly, can not only allow the swan to fly, but can be extremely inhumane and severely maim the bird for life. The Regal Swan
