Do swans eat eggs?

Hi there,
I was visiting Prospect Park today (in Brooklyn NYC), watching a group of swans (some adults and some cygnet) and geese. Some other people were feeding the birds bits of bread so there were a lot of birds gathered around. Suddenly we saw an adults swan fish a white egg out of the water and eat it. It chewed up the egg and even ate the shell. It was very strange- we didn't see where the egg came from (seemed to come from the water) and Ive never seen anything like this. Is this normal?? It has been haunting me all day!
Thanks,
Zoë
