In Response To: Re: Feeding swans (The Regal Swan)

Hi Marge:

The major issue is the species of swan and if your state wildlife agency allows feeding of wildlife. If they are Mute Swans, then you may not be able to help them as Wisconsin and other states are trying to kill all the Mute Swans. The point is to free up their wetland habitats so the states can introduce the larger Trumpeter Swans in their place for Trophy Waterfowl hunting.

If you are allowed to help the swans and feed them, then you would want to provide a mixture of 1/2 cracked corn and 1/2 poultry layer pellet. Throw the food approximately 3 feet from the bank or farther. DO NOT place any food on the bank as predators can attack the swans as they feed. The farther you throw the food, the more likely the swans can stay in deeper water and make a quick escape if needed. This procedure also prevents pests such as ants, rats, raccoons and other wildlife from accessing the food.

Additionally, provide the swans with lettuce as this will help supplement their vegetative needs during the winter months when such vegetation is scarce. The Regal Swan
