Ask the Swan Specialist

In Response To: My mute swan is not aggressive anymore... (Cheryl)

We live on a river (brackish). Two years ago a pair of swans decided to make it their home during the winter (with other water fowl going through). The male would be REALLY aggressive toward the geese, and would not be relentless until he would chase them all away, protecting his food and the female. Spring came, and they went up river to live in the high cat o nine tales and had 3 different nests at different times (We think the coyotes got the eggs or the snapping turles, as they never had cygnets...so sad) She started to become the more aggresive one protecting her nest, and now that winter is coming back they moved back home. (They came all seasons for their daily feeding). The male is not aggresive at all!!!!!,and the female seems to be the only line of defense (she is not anywhere as defensive as he was). We know these are the same 2 swans, through various markings on their bills etc., but I feel like he had a total personality change....makes me wonder if it is him or not! He's been like this for 3 months now. Any insight would be gladly recieved. We love these swans.
Thank you,
Cheryl
