There was an orphan swan on our lake who has been hanging out on my side of the lake. There was a really aggressive swan who would try to attack it whenever it could, so I sort of protected the orphan by chasing off the aggressive swan. The other offspring (cygnets?) on the lake, about the same size, have all started flying, but not the orphan. Will it eventually do it on its own? or is this something the parents teach? As you can see I'm pretty clueless, but in a few months the lake will probably freeze over and I worry that it will still be here.
