"land" swans

I bought a pair of Mute cygnets that were only 2 weeks old and raised them first in my garage then in a kennel half in and half out of the water. They are now about 4 months old and I've taken the kennel away so they can swim out into the pond. My problem is that they seldom stay on the water. They like to come to the barn which is at least an acre away. They do not seem to do much forraging in the grass and I'm concerned that they are not getting enough to eat. They only want chick starter and they waste most of that. I do not feed them anywhere except at the edge of the pond twice a day. I wonder if they come to the barn because I have domestic geese that walk up to the barn in the daytime. Even though I did not handle them much when they were small, these swans seems to be looking for me and stay beside me when I'm doing any outside project. How can I encourage them to stay in the water?
