Without seeing a photo, we're not sure about the bird your wife described. If they are indeed Black-Necks, they are probably escapees from someone's captive setting as they will not migrate that far north from South America. Also, they will not do well in your winter climate. Not doubting what your wife saw, but if she was not that close, she may have been seeing a different species of duck or goose. The Black-Necked Swans are a relatively small swan species. The red/gray caruncle is unmistakable on the bill of Black-Necks. So, if this tissue is absent, it was probably another species of waterfowl. Should she see them again, please send us a photo and we'll try to help you identify the birds. The Regal Swan
