Ask the Swan Specialist

In Response To: Swan eggs are gone from nest. (Bonnie)

This is the first time that our Mute Swans have mated and there were 4 eggs. During the egg laying process we had temperatures well below our normal. Around the time of the 4th egg being laid, the female began incubation and sitting on the nest full time, 5 days ago. This morning I go to set out feed and the female is off of the nest so I walk over to it and there are 0 eggs. I look around and see no signs of shells, etc. I read that they will take eggs away if they feel no movement but it's too early for movement so why would they remove this early on? Also when they remove, do they crack then eat the shell and all because I see no traces of the egg/shell. I enjoy your site very much, I'm a newer Swan owner so I have much to learn. Thank you, Bonnie from Indiana, USA
