Ask the Swan Specialist

In Response To: Nest is ignored by the swans: Should we remove it? (Teresa)

There are two swans in my community lake. The female started building the nest with another male. He was killed and she took up with another male. They continued to build the nest and mated often in the water. Lately, they have not paid any attention to the nest, never going to it anymore. They still come and rest nearby, but she is definitely not nesting. Is it OK to take down the Do Not Disturb, Nesting sign and remove the nest, or is there still a chance that they will have cygnets? It is June 2nd and she pays no attention to the nest. Thank you so very much for any advice or information you can provide me with.

Sincerely,

Teresa
