Hi Sara:
This could be any number of problems including aspirgillosis, pneumonia, etc. The young bird could have swallowed food and is trying to clear its throat or lungs. Not eating is an immediate concern because once a bird stops eating it is a sign that something is seriously wrong and it will only get worse resulting in the bird completely refusing food which can lead to starvation, stress and dehydration.
Additionally, if the cygnet has something wrong with it and it is contagious, it can quickly affect the rest of the family. All cygnets and parents (if possible) need to be seen by an experienced waterfowl/swan veterinarian. Antibiotics, tube feeding (to start the eating process and provide sustenance), a B-12 injection (to stimulate feeding) and an I.V. drip (to help with sustenance and provide hydration) may be necessary to save the young bird’s life if it has an infection or illness.
