Ask the Swan Specialist

In Response To: Clipped wings (Diane)

We live on a pond in Smithfield, RI. In the larger pond there are many swans. Two mated a few years ago and the male offspring now lives in the smaller pond. The flock of swans will not allow him back in the larger pond and he is not able to fly. It looks as though the large, broader feathers under his right wing are missing. He used to try to fly and not be able to achieve take off out of the water. Last winter was very mild and the pond did not totally freeze over, however, I am concerned about this year. I feed him everyday. I can't seem to find and help in our area for him. Is there anything I can do?
