Ask the Swan Specialist

In Response To: 9 month old cygnets (Heidi)

I have been following a family of swans since before the cygnets were born, there are two Polish Mute cygnets and two normal colored cygnets. I wrote when they were very young, well today is there 9 month birthday and the family is still together, well was together last weekend but the dad was being aggressive toward the larger (I assume male) cygnets. He chased them a bit and then stoppped. I know they will split up eventually but honestly I am not ready for it. Where will the cygnets go? How far away? Will they stay together. I have seen them together alone a few weeks ago. I know they are healthy and beautiful and big but I can't imagine them out of their parents care. I have read that swans can chase off their young at 6 months so I should be grateful for the last 3 months of them together. I took this picture last week of one parent and two young. I will go see them tomorrow. I hope they are all together.
