Ask the Swan Specialist

In Response To: Re: Cygnets killed. Do swan parents mourn? (The Regal Swan)

Hi Rick:

Nature does not provide time for prolonged mourning by animals and birds, otherwise the entire family and flock is susceptible to disease, predators, and other catastrophes from the stress.

Unlike humans, animals and birds mourn for a couple of hours or a day, but nature programs them to continue eating, mating, caring for their young, taking care of themselves, their families and forgetting about the losses. To mourn for an extended amount of time, takes away from the point of their life: to care for themselves and their families in order to propagate their species.
