Why Mute Swans put a leg on their back?

When boating with friends on a huge river last week we saw mute swans. When faster boats made waves, I noticed some of the swans had a leg on their back. I said to my friends "They are resting their leg." They laughed at me and said, "They are balancing in the water." Could you please tell me why the swans put a leg on their back? Thank You
