Hi Gina:

Unfortunately, this is going to happen at this time of the year. Swans, especially males, become very defensive during the mating and nesting season.

There are a couple of things you can do. First, you can get yourself a large towel or a white umbrella (without the point). If the swan starts to chase, gently flick him with the towel and say NO. If you do not want to use the towel, then open a white umbrella as soon as he charges. AGAIN NO POINT ON THE UMBRELLA! Keep the towel and umbrella between you and the swan. The object is to make you look like a bigger swan so he knows that you are the dominant swan.

Second, you can attempt to capture him. To do this, you must immediately control the wings as he can easily bruise or break your arm or leg if you do not control the wings. The best way is to get a large net with a handle, let him charge you and place the net over his head. IMMEDIATELY, control the wings and have him sit down and STATE NO. Keep him in this position for about 10 minutes. Repeat the process if he continues to chase or starts to attack. Usually, capture only takes one time and he will probably avoid you for quite some time. Swans do not like to be captured, especially if the think that they are the big bird on the block! We hope this helps. The Regal Swan
