Hi Linda:

Try to cut a small hole in the ice if you can (near the bank). The swans will stay in this area and you can feed them some cracked corn, lettuce and bread. If you can get them to come toward you with the crackers, they may stay in the broken ice to not only help keep them in the water and stay warm, but also look for food around the banks and under the water. Think about going swimming on a cold day. It is terrible to get in or out of the water, but once in the water, the water feels warmer than the outside temperature. If you can break some ice so that the swans can swim, they may also eat the lettuce and accept the cracked corn/layer pellets, although for many swans, lettuce is an acquired taste. It also may be the type of lettuce you are providing. Romaine lettuce is much greener and leafier and they may see this better than the iceberg lettuce. Hope this helps. The Regal Swan
