Hi Carol:

We need you to contact Bob Knox of Knox Swans (847) 875-3947. Bob has a veterinarian that will pinion the cygnets at a later age (using anesthesia). You will need to keep the swans together for 4 months. At that age the parents will have taught the young birds how to be swans and they can be safely transported outside of the hot summer months. You need to give all three to Bob and not to just anyone who wants the cygnets. The reasoning is that the cygnets do need to be pinioned by most state laws. If the birds fly, they can and will be shot out of the sky by wildlife officials. If you or the person that wants the cygnets does not have a veterinarian experienced in the pinioning of older birds (swans) the birds could still be able to fly, be severely disfigured and even die under the improper usage of anesthesia. Additionally, clipping the wings is not a guaranteed procedure to keep the birds from flying unless you have the ability to capture the birds and clip the wings on a regular 6 month basis. So, in the interest of the birds, it would be better to give them to Bob or someone who has a veterinarian knowledgeable about how to pinion a cygnet at a later age.

We would also recommend our book, Swans of the World Habitat: Setting the Standard for Swan Conservation prior to adopting/owning swans to understand their basic care, daily maintenance and habitat requirements. The book can be found on this site as well as (www.theregalswan.com) The Regal Swan
