Ask the Swan Specialist

In Response To: Re: Female leaving mate, 3 cygnets (Betty)

I wrote to you last week re 19 year old swan leaving 3 cygnets and cob behind and traveling to another lake. Found out she was sick with upper respiratory infection. Kept her home and gave Baytril for 7 days.

Returned her to her lake and found her sitting near the street this morning. I fed her mazuri in the grass with a bucket of water. The cygnets and cob joined her. The cob ate with her then started biting her hard on her neck. This was not like him to be anything but protective and tender. Do you think he knows she has been sick and wants to destroy her so the rest of the family doesn't get sick? He was pretty rough with her.

Thank you.

Betty
