Young swans flapping their wings, forming a circle

A couple weeks ago, we were watching a group of swans that we were certain was that of the regular family, but with two members missing. Not that long after, a group of 5 came flying in and landed not too far from the other group. To our surprise, one of the newcomers started swimming to the family, and the father didn't do a thing. Then a second one left the group and joined the bigger group. Guess we found the two missing members because the patriarch chased off the other 3. Does it happen often? And why exactly does it happen? Do the young swans come and go as they please by a certain age?

After the dad went chasing the swans, for some reason, a couple of the kids started flapping their wings like they were going to fly, but flapped around in a circle in the water. It was a bit hard to see what exactly they were doing, as it seemed that the two were chasing each other in that manner. With no idea, I thought it'd be amusing to think that they're throwing a temper because their friends got chased off. Would you know why they do that? It's first time we've seen it.
