In Response To: Stranded swan? Mother and cygnet gone to area separated from the pound (Nancy)

In a local pond there is a male and female swan with their young cygnet. The cygnet seemed to have gone over a small waterfall and the female joined him there in the shallow area. The area is surrounded by high walls and at one end is a drain. The male swims nearby in the pond, near the waterfall. My daughter and her friends, in an effort to help, managed to get the cygnet out and put him in the pond, where he immediately swam to his father, who nuzzled him. The female seemed upset but didn't leave the shallow area below the waterfall. The next day the cygnet was down with her again, having either fallen or been pushed over the waterfall. Is the female possibly unable to fly out? Or does she prefer to keep her baby there for safety reasons? Should we just leave them alone? There are large turtles in the pond so it is possible she is keeping the baby safer there.
