Hi Rob:

Glad you could find her a new home. The best way is to find a large box and place a towel on the bottom of the box. DO NOT allow her to sit or stand on any slick surface as this can damage her legs.

Also, see if you can find someone to drive you and you sit near the box to calm her.

We use veterinary slings which we have developed, but since you do not have this equipment, you will need a large box lined with a towel.

Take two more towels and place them so that they form a cross.

Place her in the middle of the cross and bring the edges of the towels up and over her wings so that she cannot flail.

You do not want to get her too hot because this will further increase her body temperature. Stress will already have raised her temperature somewhat just by being captured and held. Get a clean spray bottle and water her down frequently during the trip to keep her wet and cool. Offer her some cool water, she may not drink, but if she becomes stressed enough, she will need to take a drink.

Alert the individual where she is going that you are transporting the swan and will need to make sure that a temporary introduction pen is available whether in the water or on land with food and water immediately available once she arrives. If the pen is not in the water, then take a hose and sufficiently spray her with cool water.

Hopefully, the pen is completely enclosed for introduction onto the lake and safe from predators. A feeder will need to be placed in the pen and the pen needs to be 1/2 in water and 1/2 on land so that she can enter the water too cool off and bathe, but will be able to preen on land.

She will need to stay in the introductory pen for at least 1-2 weeks depending upon her acceptance by other swans. If there is any sign of aggression, she needs to be immediately removed from the lake or pond so that injury does not occur to her. Also, the more interaction with the new owner, feeding, talking, etc., will make this transition a lot more successful. You may still be able to visit her from time to time, but eventually she will become familiar with her new owner and surroundings. The Regal Swan
