In Response To: Re: Do swans move from lake to lake? (The Regal Swan)

Hi Sue:

Yes, swans move from lake to lake. However, this may not be the actual reason you are missing swans. Michigan and other states are killing entire Mute Swan families so that they can use their habitats to introduce the larger Trumpeter Swans for Trophy Waterfowl hunting.

This killing has been going on since the 80's even though Michigan DNR officials admitted at the 2014 International Swan Symposium that it was costing a lot of taxpayer monies and it was an unsustainable program. The amount of taxpayer waste is to continue until 2030 so that no Mute Swans are allowed in the state of Michigan. Despite Michigan DNR officials stating that the Mute Swans are increasing exponentially, are detrimental to the habitat and are aggressive, these same officials admitted that they had no viable scientific evidence.

We're sure that in the case of the Flint water crisis and other problems in Michigan, this waste of taxpayer money to afford the opportunity for less than 1% of the population to hunt, could be used for better purposes. We hope that taxpayers will let their representatives know that this killing is a waste of not only taxpayer money, but also the waste of an entire species. To eradicate one entire species to introduce another species for hunting is absolutely inhumane, if not unethical and criminal. We hope that this killing will end in the near future. The Regal Swan
