In Response To: What happens after babies are hatched (Lauren)

Our swans had been sitting on eggs for about 42 days when last night one hatched. The femal is still sitting on the nest (on a floating barge we build for her in our pond so she is protected from predators). I don't see the one that hatched last night. Could she be sitting on it? This is the first year our swans are having babies. Last year she laid eggs but never sat on them. This year they are 4 years old but maybe they still don't know what to do exactly? I'm worried she may have suffocated the one that just hatched last night. Does that happen? After they hatch what normally happens to them?... Do they just start swimming around right away or stay under the mom still? I'm sorry, we are new to this and don't know what to expect. Thank you for your time in responding!
