Re: Pine needles in the mouth of the swan - and - holes in foot

Hi Swan Lover:

Get her to the vet and/or zoo immediately. They have to remove the pine needle as this can cause a large mass to grow in the back of the mouth and she will not be able to eat or swallow. This is life threatening, but with adequate intravenous feeding and liquids as well as antibiotics, she should do well. However, if there are more pine needles in the area, it will be a continuing problem so that either she needs to stay in the zoo or be given to someone that can care for her in a farm/lake setting free from predators or other problems.

Pulling the needle from her mouth is only the beginning since the possibility of a mass with the need of antibiotic and supportive care is probably required.

The foot problems may also be associated with sharp pine needles or other objects that may have penetrated the feet. Fungus, parasitic or bacterial infection may give the whitish appearance. Again, veterinary medical care is needed. Please let us know how this situation progresses. The Regal Swan
