Georgina,

I live in NJ where we have a swan on our lake. Our lake is also frozen and our swan cannot fly. We keep an area of the lake open for him by having installed aeration systems that pump air into the lake thereby keeping an area of open water. It only takes a few pond pumps and garden hoses weighted down to keep open a good size area that the swan can be safe inside at night and during the day.
