Ask the Swan Specialist

In Response To: Swans frozen alive (Mel)

I went to visit a bridge where approximately 20 mute swans are wintering in Massachusetts. As I was watching I realized that 3 of them were frozen in the pond. One looked like it was putting its head in the water to look for food and froze that way. There is more encroaching ice, with some open water, but I don't understand why they don't all fly to water that is all open with a better current to keep the water from freezing. The temps. here are not supposed to come close to 32 for days.
