Ask the Swan Specialist

In Response To: Swan babies (Joanne)

We have a flock of swans the parents and 6 babies they were born in the Spring 2011. We recently saw that they forced one of the babies out of the flock. The baby comes to shore and if the flock is around they will not let him come into the water. He just stays and sits on the beach/grassy area. I am guessing they are about 7 months. Will the baby be able to survive our winters here in Northwest NJ. It gets quite miserbly cold here in the mountains.

Why would they kick him/her out of the flock I don't know what you call a swan family?

Can I do anything to encourage them to take him back? They chase after him. Not the siblings just the parents do the chasing. the siblings just stay at the water edge.

What is up with this? What can I do? I don't want the swan to perish.

Thank you

Joanne
