Ask the Swan Specialist

In Response To: Lonely mute swan paired up with a Canada goose (Irena)

A large mute swan lives in the neighborhood pond. Last spring he (I assume it's a he) tried to break up a Canada geese couple with goslings, but was thwarted by the goose male. Then our swan changed his tactics: he started living with the geese, followed them to their grazing field, stayed with them on the bank at night, swam with them, etc. By now, the goslings have grown up and fledged, and the geese left the pond, only one goose stayed behind - with the swan. Hard to tell if it's the same female or another one. The swan and the goose spend a lot of time together, and he's very protective of her. We are wondering, do mute swans and Canada geese interbreed? Thank you!
