Ask the Swan Specialist

In Response To: Abandoned cygnets (Pam)

We live near St. Louis Mo, in Edwardsville, IL . We were surprised to see a pair of Cignet swans nest in a pond near our house this spring. 3 offspring. One born earlier as it turned white sooner than the other two. The parents and the oldest flew south about a month ago. The two remaining babies, still with some grey, still at the pond. Temps hit 20 degrees last night....fortunately warmer like 45 to 50 during the day.

I have seen one of the babies flying around the pond. Can they survive the winter...why wouldn't they fly south, I thought they are born with the instinct to migrate.

What can I do to help them survive the winter without making them dependent on me?
