Ask the Swan Specialist

In Response To: 1 month cygnet cannot walk/stand (sonia mesry)

hi there ! once again i turn to you guys...Dr GArdner and Dr Brown..HELP ! we have a cygnet that was totally fine earlier today and then early this evening he could not stand/walk! :(
We caught the cygnet and placed him in a doggie crate down next to our lake...he is locked in till morning. His parents and other sibling are close by and staying by his side. He did eat and drink water ...he just was upset and kept peeping while his upset mum barked to him . It is 12.40 am and i am praying that he just sprained his foot/leg, etc....
i hope that nothing happens through the evening....and they stay safe.
What could be wrong with this little fella? what do u suggest for us to do ?
also......if we take the cygnet away to the vet....will the parents accept the cygnet upon return?
he can stand up for a second and then he falls down !! He is sleeping now while the swan family are by his side ....i am worried about them being on the ground by the lake...i was under the assumtion that the swans and cygnets sleep on water over night? however...even before this fella was hurt..the swan family has slept on our bank./..is this normal?
we are very worried............PLEASE advise as soon as you can . :)
warm regards,
Sonia in Atlanta, Ga
