Hi Donna:

We suppose that it is possible that a cygnet gets buried in the mud during a winter storm, but the chances of saving it would be unbelievably remote unless someone was standing nearby and immediately rescued the cygnet. The cygnet would either suffocate or succumb to pneumonia or other illness from being subjected to inclement weather. Mother swans allow the cygnets to sit on their backs under their feathers. Or, the cygnets nestle under their mothers on the nest so they can keep warm and dry. We hope this information is of benefit. The Regal Swan
