Where i work a single mute swan has moved close to the back lawns away from a lake which is close by. We think its a male, hes big ( is there another way to tell other than size? ) he is banging on the glass patio windows with his beak ( Could be at his reflection) then he sits resting with his head under his wing. keeps walking over to the windows. There is cut grass and seed for other birds about. Should he be with a mate by now ? He doesnt look like a youngster.If he has lost his mate will he make his way to where other swans are , or is he in danger of moping away due to depression. Would a swan rescue centre help. What would they likely do for him, if it turns out t0 be female, do they behave any differently if they have lost their mate. Would a bachelor/ette travel alone to find first mate or stay with a flock until they pair up ? thus making it more likely this is a widow/widower swan :( thanx K.C., S.E Suffolk England.
