Ask the Swan Specialist

In Response To: Re: caring for mute swan on illinois river (The Regal Swan)

Hi Lucy:

With the additional information you provided, we would surmise one of the following:

1. The swan got onto the wrong migratory path with a bunch of geese and since some geese remain, he/she thinks that he is supposed to stay, especially now that he has found a group of humans willing to provide food without his working for it.

2. He may be just resting on the migratory path and will eventually leave to rejoin his flock.

3. He is pinioned or clipped and got away from his owner (if he is pinioned) he will never be able to fly, but assuming he got on your pond someway, he either flew there or someone dropped him there.

4. If he was abandoned, then it could be that a male owner or someone that was around him was abusive or that he was specifically raised by a female. Either case, he would be wary of males.

Swans do not like apples, fruit or foods other than lettuce, bread, cracked corn and layer pellets. So, he was probably expecting his normal meal and you offered something that was not supposed to be on the menu. Swans do have personality and they will let you know when they are displeased. Good luck and let us know how this situation progresses. The Regal Swan
