Hi Jim:
The first thing you must do is get the swans sexed. If they are both females or males, there may be a fight in which one or both are injured or killed. If your older swan is a female, she may look to remate. However, most male swans will go through life without remating. So, it is imperative that you get the swans sexed to alleviate any territorial fights. Even if the swans are of opposite sex, there are still no any guarantees that the swans will accept each other on the same pond.
Placing the new swan in the pen area, will help alert you to any signs of aggressiveness from either swan. If they are male and female, it is extremely important that the swans are separated for approximately 2 weeks. Once you release the new swan, you will need to make preparations for a rescue in the event that the male swan tries to hurt or kill the female swan. We hope this information is of benefit.
