Ask the Swan Specialist

In Response To: mute swans and plants (Beth)

I am the park manager of a park in Dunedin, Florida. We have two mute swans that the park has had for 15 years. They live in a pond with an island in the pond for them to roam around. I have to plant vines and some low lying plants on two ends of the island and I am afraid that what I pick will be toxic to them. They will have access to these plants. I did find a site that listed (3 pages) plants, trees and schrubs that are toxic to birds but they also said not everything toxic is listed there. After reading the list, I am afraid there is nothing I can plant.

Is there any type of flowering vine and dwarf plant that I could plant that would not harm them??

Thank you for your response.
