Ask the Swan Specialist

In Response To: Mother and cygnet (Kelly)

We live in NC and had a pair of muted swans on our 15 acre pond. The female is about 8. About 4 years ago I bought a male for her. They bonded and have a couple of hatches for about 3 years now. The little ones usually don't make it but we have had two fly away. This year we had 9 cygnets which only one has survived. The male got tangled in a rope this week and strangled to death. The mother and baby stay separated most of the day but do come together at feeding time. The mother can't fly but the baby can. If the baby is a male will the female eventually take it as a mate? I didn't want to introduce another male to the lake if we had two females or would that be a problem? Please help!
