An injured mute cygnet born this past spring on a local lake is unable to fly and was, therefore, abandoned by its parents and siblings recently when they flew away. The lake that it is on has not frozen over completely in the past and we feel fairly confident that it can feed through the winter with the added help of people who visit frequently and supplement its feeding. We were wondering, however, whether it can manage on its own without its own family or another flock as a support system. It is still a juvenile and, as such, we are concerned that it is now completely on its own. Can you tell me what its chances for survival are under these circumstances.
