Ask the Swan Specialist

In Response To: Swan eye infection/cut? (Bradley)

I have two trumpeter swans who are about 5-6 months old. They have always appeared healthy until today, when I noticed the female had an eye issue. In her left eye, it looked like a mixture of yellowish mucus and a bit of blood. I wiped the mucus(/infection?) part away, kind of like when you wake up in the morning or when you have pinkeye. The red bloody part did not wipe away and I'm wondering if perhaps its tissue from the eye or maybe just blood that for w/e reason wouldnt wipe away.

Underneath this, her eye was glassy blue, unlike the dark blackish color it usually is and how her other healthy eye still looks. I could tell she couldn't see out of it at the moment because when i waved my hand by her infected eye she had no reaction, but the first time i waved my hand by her healthy eye, she flinched and cowarded a little bit. Any thoughts and would a vet be able to doing anything without charging me hundreds of dollars? Thanks for any insight you can offer me.
