Ask the Swan Specialist

In Response To: Swan Hit By Car (Lynne)

I live on a lake in NJ which had been frozen for several days. Our female swan was struck by a car and killed last Thursday evening on an elevated bridge some 60 feet above the lake. She never leaves the lake even when frozen and does not fly well. We cannot understand how she got up onto the bridge in the first place since these swans do not get up on land. We heard from a witness that she was trying to cross the road. Will swans leave a frozen lake to walk on a road?

Also, this leaves a 3 year old male alone. He is staying in the same area of the lake which has now mostly thawed. He seems to be searching for her. How long will he continue to look for her? Will he return to the other end of the lake where we would feed him and he female?
