Hi Keith:

1. If the swans are of the same gender, this is really a good thing for you as they will not be able to produce cygnets and you will not have to worry about cygnets. If they are wild swans, then even if they produce eggs, you should leave them alone and let nature take its course.

2. Swans can begin mating at 2 years of age. Some swans may wait another year until they begin mating. In any case, whatever gender you have, male/female, male/male, female/female, the swans will begin to mate, build nests and lay eggs. Obviously, if you have two males, no eggs will be produced, but they will still attempt to mate, build a nest and will sit on the nest until their hormone levels abate and they figure out that nothing is going to happen. The same will occur with two females, but eggs (obviously infertile) will be layed. The swans will sit, hormones abate and leave once nothing happens. If they are male/female, then all the above will occur, with viable eggs layed and incubation taking place until cygnets are produced or for whatever environmental reason (flooding, drought, severe weather, predation) the eggs do not come to fruition.

3. If the ducks are being chased from the area, this may because the hormone levels are increased at this time (mating/nesting) season for the swans and the swans may continue to chase until the hormones abate. However, if this behavior continues, then the swans have listed this area as their territory and are not going to be receptive to any interlopers and may try to kill any ducklings or ducks that enter into their nesting areas.

4. If the swans have been in your pond since October, then more than likely, you have a good area for the winter and the birds may not migrate. Your feeding will also enhance the possibility that the swans will stay. However, if your pond should ever freeze and the birds do not migrate, you will need to purchase a de-icer/aerator for your pond to keep water open for the winter, but even in the summer this equipment is important to keep the water circulating to help prevent the birds from dying from botulism. If the pond cannot be aerated, then you will need to provide some type of indoor shelter (shed, barn or garage) safe from predators to house the birds during severe winters. The Regal Swan
