Hi Mary:
The swan could have become disoriented while on the migratory path, abandoned by the parents and is a young juvenile trying to figure out its location, is hurt or sick.
We would strongly recommend that you immediately contact a wildlife/waterfowl rehabilitator, veterinarian, zoo or someone in your area to pick-up the swan and safely take it indoors for the upcoming inclement weather. Otherwise, this bird is going to die. If someone has a rehabilitation center, garage, shed or barn, we would recommend that it be housed in a warm setting with straw or sheets placed on the floor to protect its feet from injury and to keep it warm. Cracked corn, poultry layer pellets and lettuce should be mixed together and placed in a pan or water bucket. The food needs to be submerged in the water and ample water provided so that the bird does not choke when eating. Good luck and please let us know how this situation is resolved. The Regal Swan
