The Regal Swan® Foundation, Inc. and Gatorland® Join Forces with Destron Fearing to Pioneer use of Microchips for Animal Health

Destron Fearing LifeChips with Bio-Therm ® Technology to help monitor Swans, Alligators and Snakes

ORLANDO, FLORIDA –February 9, 2011 – The Regal Swan® Foundation, Inc., and Gatorland®, “Alligator Capital of the World”, both located in Orlando, Florida have joined forces with Destron Fearing, a global leader in innovative animal identification, to pioneer research and health monitoring using Destron Fearing’s LifeChip microchips with Bio-Therm technology in swans, alligators and snakes.

With help from Destron Fearing engineers, Regal Swan’s veterinarians and research teams will address the issue of micro-chip migration in cygnets (baby swans) so that young birds can be micro-chipped at an earlier age in the event veterinary medical treatment is needed. Microchip migration in alligators and snakes will be addressed by Gatorland’s veterinarians and researchers.

Based in St.Paul, Minnesota, Destron Fearing is a subsidiary of Digital Angel (OTC BB: DIGA), an advanced technology company in the field of animal identification and emergency identification solutions. The company’s LifeChip microchips use a patented bio-compatible material, BioBond®, which secures the microchip to the administration site within 24 hours of placement. Additionally, LifeChips utilize Bio-Therm technology to check an animal’s temperature through the use of microchip and RFID reader.

Commenting on the joint effort, Dan Ellsworth, Senior-Vice President of Destron Fearing, said, “RFID technology has been a proven resource in the field of animal health. Working together with the Regal Swan® Foundation and Gatorland® has offered Destron Fearing a unique opportunity to aid veterinarian medical research which may expand the practical use of our technology with different animals.”

Presently, baby swans cannot be micro-chipped until they have developed muscle structure to hold the microchip in place. If veterinary medical treatment is required during the first 1-3 months, there is no viable way of keeping medical records on the young birds using microchips during this period. Gatorland will study body temperature data from snakes and crocodiles to help breeders and owners with temperatures to enhance the husbandry efforts of reptiles.

By using Destron Fearing technology a new tool will be employed in the preventative care and overall health monitoring of swans and reptiles.

About LifeChip
LifeChip Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Microchips offer a unique and unalterable means of animal identification. LifeChip Microchips, about the size of a grain of rice, contain a passive transponder programmed with a unique 15 digit ISO-compliant number. Once in place these microchips can be read by any Destron Fearing or ISO-compliant reader. Each LifeChip is capped with a patented, bio-compatible material called Bio-Bond® which secures the microchip to the administration site within 24 hours of placement. LifeChip Bio-Thermo® is also available in some versions of the microchip and a way to monitor body temperature in animals.
