Hi Minerva
The U.S. is divided by various flyways, such as Atlantic, Mississippi, Pacific, etc. Although birds in various regions will go to the nearest flyway for winter and summer migration, it totally depends on where the birds were raised and the migration paths that their parents taught them. Even then, some may for whatever reason, such as strong storms blowing them off course or the need to find more food, etc., take a different route or crossover paths. If the swans were from the Massachusetts area and stayed along the Atlantic flyway, then they would head south along the coast and stay around North Carolina or even further south to Georgia.
